Meeting This Week

Chapter meeting this week ,Thursday September 12, 7 PM, in the Old Idaho Power Building, 214 East Center, Park in the back and enter back of building on west side door labeled "Southeast Idaho Council of Governments, Inc".

Chapter meeting this week ,Thursday August 8th, 7 PM
For several years, the Portneuf River Back Country Horsemen have packed water up the mountain for the Pocatello Running Club's "Over the Top Race."  They describe this race as one of Pocatello Idaho's most popular and beautiful singletrack trails in the City Creek Trail System.

The Pocatello Running Club uses money from sponsored races to support charitable causes. This year we were chosen to recive their support. They will be attending our meeting this Thursday to present the award.

I hope chapter members will make an extra effort to come to the meeting to show their appreciation.

In 2018 the Portneuf River Back Country Horsemen donated 459 hours of their time improving the riding experience of horsemen in East Idaho. We worked on 188 miles of trails and the total value of our efforts is calculated at $30,800!

On Saturday morning, meet at 10AM at the visitor center in Almo.

I have the Junipers Group Campsite rented on Friday night and I can't get my money back so I will be there. If you would like a more relaxed Saturday, come down and camp with me on Friday. RSVP if you are going to camp since cell phone coverage at the camp is very poor and the camp is not easy to find.

Steve Hurley 221-4626 steve@hurleystar.com. Be sure to download this brochure. It has a lot of information on getting there, and where everything is located.
https://trailmaps.us/City_of_Rocks (brochure is also on our "East Idaho Trail Maps" page.)
Also note that I am taking the Over the Hill Gang to City of Rocks next Wednesday. The weather is supposed to be better. Call me if you might want to go on that ride. The Over the Hill Gang is a gated horse club and will generally travel faster.

I am excited about showing members this area. It is a notable geologic site as well as a landmark along the California Trail. Over the last few decades City of Rocks has become a mecca for rock climbing.

Temperature will be cool (low 60s) and the wind will be Breezy (11 mph). Later in the morning and during the ride, the sky will be partly cloudy, there will be a 60% chance of precipitation, with some light rain likely. Overall better than Friday if you are making a last minute decision whether or not to go on Saturday.

About five million dollars a year from offshore drilling fees has been regularly given to Idaho for recreational access to outdoor activities. Congress did not reauthorize the 2019 funding. Without that funding, improving access to the upper South Fork of the Snake River and 7 other projects throughout Idaho will not be funded.
Each year we need to badger our U.S. congressional representatives to take more action on important issues. I recommend sending them a message on their contact page.

There are two ways Back Country Horsemen of America raises money to lobby in Washington. One is our local dues, and the second is a raffle. Any money we raise with events, our chapter keeps to buy trail equipment, pay operating expenses and to send delegates to the State meeting. Please pay your yearly dues and please buy a calendar. You can pay dues and buy calendars on the PAY HERE tab above.
Horse Fly Spray
Permethrin 10% by Durvet, there are other brands and use 3.2 oz per gal. This can be put in a 2 gal. pump sprayer to spray around the barn or anywhere there are flies. For use on a horse or rider add the following ingredients.
Mineral oil 16 fl oz per gal. this is to keep the fly spray on the horse longer.
When you buy horse fly spray in the store it states that it is fly repellant. It may have several  ingredients in it, one being Permethrin . Permethrin kills flies it will not repel them.
DEET is the only thing that will repel flies with any effect. You can buy DEET almost 100% at sporting goods stores in 2oz bottles. 1 oz per gal.
Fill up the rest of the gal. with water. Shake well. And shake well before each use.
This fly spray can be use on most animals even you. I spray my hat and shirt before the ride keep me free of flies and mosquitos.

Why do we have so much smoke? Well the current fire is down in Nevada. Wind blows the smoke from the Southwest right toward southeast Idaho. Caltopo can show you where active fires are located.

To find out our local air quality map click on the image below. Colors are based on AQI "Air Quality Index."  There is an animation "AQI loop" for changes during the current day.
