MAPS THAT LET YOU CREATE, EDIT, AND SAVE GPS FILES

A full featured program or app should have all the editing tools necessary to create and fully modify GPX tracks and waypoints. It should also be be able to export and import GPX files. It should also have at least one high resolution topographic map, one terrain and road map and one map of good satellite imagery. The app should be able to show the user the exact geographical area for which maps have been downloaded for offline use.

You can create and edit tracks, upload, download, and organize GPX files, and print 5 maps for free. A $20 subscription gives you twenty max size 13X19" PDF maps, and $50 gives you fifty max size 36X48" maps. $100 gives you a Android app for your phone or tablet that can download map tiles for when you plan to be offline and out of cell range. $500 lets you start a team.

Expert GPS runs as  Windows software. It is dependent only on the internet for backgroud maps. I can display a gpx file faster than the internet apps. Plus there is a few tools that other apps don't have for working with large gpx files.

Avenza runs entirely on  your phone. It does not use "slippy" maps like the apps above. Georeferenced PDF maps are selected online and downloaded to your phone. Some are free. Many are not. This app is popular with government land managers. You can make your own georeferenced pdf maps on CalTopo.

How to record your own Tracts and Waypoints with a handheld GPS
or GPS enabled Smartphone
There are two options available to those interested in digital mapping, either a GPS enabled smartphone, or a handheld GPS unit. The Gaia website argues "For nearly every purpose, people will find that an iPhone or Android performs better than a Garmin or other outdoor GPS unit." That statement is somewhat biased because it comes from a site that writes software for phones. However smartphones may be a good choice for many people. There is a learning curve even with the phone being "smart." If you would like to start learning, here is a good basic article on "How To Turn Your Android Phone Into The Ultimate GPS Navigator using BackCountry Navigator."

The weak side of smartphones is their memory, battery, and ruggedness. By memory I mean the ability to store a map. I can store all the topographical data for many states in my handheld GPS. It takes more pre-planning and effort to prepare a smartphone with maps for an adventure that will be out of cellular coverage. Most handheld GPS are waterproof and use AA batteries. When I plan to record a daylong horseback ride, I carry a couple of backup AA batteries and have no worry about power. An editor of opencyclemap believes that the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx is a good choice. They can be purchased on EBay for less than $150. Don't worry about topographical maps for your Garmin, they can be had for free (see Mapping: Get Map Data).
